A Stitch in Time, explored decay and repair in Charles Waterton’s wall in Walton, near Wakefield. Funded by Wakefield Council and created in collaboration with The Friends of Waterton’s Wall, A Stitch in Time showed at Anglers Country Park Visitors’ Centre, Wakefield from December 1st 2022 – March 31st 2023, and at Wakefield Museum from April -September 2023.

200 years ago, Charles Waterton returned home from his travels determined to build a wall around his estate in Walton to protect the wildlife within from poachers and foxes. In doing so, he is credited with creating the first nature reserve. The sandstone wall is 3 miles long and was originally 9-16ft tall. Some of it is still in good condition but other stretches are crumbling, and some are already just rubble. Although the erosion is beautiful, it is also really worrying that the wall may not survive for future generations unless something is done to conserve it.
